FPS and MOBA

During the era of the multiplayer online computer games two of the most famous game genres are the First Person Shooter (FPS) and the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA).

FPS games include a gun or projectile weapon-based combat through a first person perspective. The player experiences the action through the eyes of the character he controls. Unlike the popular third-person shooters the player can not see behind the character if he does not command him to turn his head around. FPS games are a more realistic and intense experience for this reason.

Their primary design element is first-person combat, mainly involving firearms.

Wolfenstein 3D, released in 1992, has been credited with inventing this game genre, but critics have since identified similar, though less advanced games, developed as far back as 1973. Following the release of “Doom” in 1993, games of this genre were commonly called "Doom clones". In the years following the term First-Person Shooter was invented.

Today the most popular FPS online games are Counter Strike and Call of Duty. Their gameplay is similar with Call of Duty being more realistic, thus making it harder to play. Take a look at Call of Duty's gameplay:

MOBA is a sub-genre of the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre of video games. In the RTS games the player controls units and builds structures in order to improve his army, fortress, camp and defend himself against his opponents. In MOBA the player controls a single character and there is no unit construction. The structures are already built forming his character's base. The character has a unique set of skills and as the game goes on he earns levels and buys and upgrades items in order to become stronger. In a sense, it is a fusion of Action and RTS games.

MOBA games emphasize on cooperative team play since each team consists of a number of players (usually five) who form the team's overall strategy. The objective of the game is the destruction of the main structure of the opponent's base. Computer controlled minions spawn every few seconds marching towards the enemy base via certain paths called "lanes" and the players benefit from killing them as their characters earn experience to the next level and gold to buy items.

The genre has its roots in Aeon of Strife (AoS), a custom map from StarCraft. The first major MOBA game map that was sponsored for tournaments was the Defence of the Ancients (DotA) custom map for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne.

The most popular MOBA games currently are League of Legends (LoL) which was based on DOTA and DotA 2. LoL has officially become the most successful game ever and brings a huge income to its developer company, Riot Games. The prize of the 2013 LoL World Cup was $5.000.000.
